Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that people who discontinue new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing such drugs need to be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a return to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically see a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the injections accounts for the heightened regain.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It was like something flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," described one woman.

This challenge is worsened if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is higher among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural support.
